Honestly, there isn't much of interest going on in my life. It sucks, but I'm just
working between academic programs.

B.S. Biochemistry/Physics, Louisiana State University of Shreveport (2002 - 2006)

At this point, I had intended to proceed straight into a M.D. program, but due to RL circumstances, I was forced to suspend my academic studies temporarily. I worked ~30 hours a week throughout my degree program, and work about 40-45 hours a week now while taking a few random graduate courses for personal interest. I still fully plan to finish my studies in the field of medicine as soon as I am able.

13: Do you drink/smoke? I do not smoke, and very rarely drink. I don't even really consider it drinking because of how little/infrequently it happens. I hate the taste of alcohol. Most of what I will drink consists of a glass of this very nice plum wine that I keep a bottle of around the house.

First post of the year!

So I made 7 posts in 2007. If I hope to beat that this year, I might as well start early. So here are some random things that I've been doing/found interesting lately!

My internet is being especially crappy tonight, so I'll edit in pictures and whatnot tomorrow if it's better. -_-

Hmm... where to start...

Books!
So I'm a big book nerd and love to read. Here is what I've read in the past few weeks or so that is worthy of mention:

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas

-This is a great book that hooked me from the very beginning. Dumas has a way of writing that really sucks you in and makes it very hard to put his books down. I read the unabridged version, and I would recommend the same to anyone. I can't imagine what you would remove to narrow this book down. It is quite long, although I hardly noticed once I got into it. There is an anime based on this book titled Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo that is among my favorite shows. While it has a futuristic setting and a bit of artistic license taken, it is a very faithful reproduction of the story (with few minor exceptions) with some great, very unique animation (my avatar is the Count from this show). If you have seen the movie that somehow managed to get the rights to name itself after this book, I'm so sorry. While trying very hard not to rant, I will just say that almost everything in the movie is wrong and is hardly even inspired by the book. Not just a typical "the book is better than the movie", just wrong. This pretty much sums it up:

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis

-I read a few of the books when I was a child, but hardly remembered them. I'm very glad that I decided to re-read them, as they are quite good. The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven books that all take place in the same world(s). Most people have read at least one of them (most commonly The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe). They are pretty well known for their Christian references, although it isn't the type of book that tries to push its' philosophy on you. Anyone from any religious background (or none at all) could enjoy these books. While considered by many to be children's books, I thoroughly enjoyed them and consider them good for all ages, much like the Harry Potter series. There has already been one movie based on Narnia, with a second on the way this summer (they are making all 7). The first movie is a very accurate version, and was generally pretty good IMHO.

-This is the most recent book I've finished, and what a trip it was. First off, this book is amazing. Secondly, it is LONG. The unabridged version is even slightly longer than Monte Cristo, making it the longest novel that I've read (I think). I would not recommend the unabridged version of this book to any but the most dedicated of readers. While the story in Les Mis is top notch, Hugo includes a copious amount of extra 'stuff' that is mostly not directly related to the story at all. Such as 48 pages on the battle of Waterloo, and roughly equally lengthy sections on the current politics and social structure of 19th century France, among other random (and sometimes boring) topics. While some of this does manage to give a sense of what life was like in the world at that time, I really don't think you will suffer for having not read it. That being said, the plot and characters are really brought together in Les Mis to form a true masterpiece of literature. This book managed to edge out Monte Cristo for my personal #1 spot, which was quite a feat. While Les Mis may not keep you glued to the pages like Monte Cristo, it's power can't be denied. The last few chapters especially are quite intense, and will definitely stir your emotions. ^^ While Monte Cristo shows how the world can take a good person, drive him to darkness, and consume him with vengeance, Les Mis shows how you can take a hardened and miserable convict, and turn him into a venerable, loving, selfless person. Now I just need to go see the musical and I'll be a happy person. =)

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

-Just started reading this yesterday. I'm really not very sure what it's about, other than it's science fiction. Reading on the recommendation of several different people.

I'll probably be finished with Ender's Game in the next day or so, and I'm not sure what's up next on my booklist. Possible candidates that I'm interested in lately are: Something else by Alexandre Dumas (The Three Musketeers, Man in the Iron Mask, etc), The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, something by Jules Verne, something by Isaac Asimov, A Briefer History of Time, and I just realized how long this list will be, so I'm just gonna stop here. -_-;

Movies!
After the overly long section on books, I'll just mention the latest two movies I've seen.
I guess I just have less to say about movies than books. =P

Cloverfield

-This movie was pretty cool, although be warned that is filmed entirely in that "Blair Witch" style of shaking, hand camera perspective. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding this movie both pre-release and even now that I've seen this one. Needless to say, there are still lots of unanswered questions, but I'll definitely be there for the next one.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

-I've heard very mixed reviews about this movie, but going by the trailer and the story it's based on, I had to see for myself. My verdict: Awesome! I thought this movie was great. Of course, Johnny Depp was a great match for Sweeney Todd, so that helped. I didn't know this movie was going to be a musical of sorts, but considering its' background, I'm not surprised and certainly not disappointed. I somehow managed to miss Sweeney Todd when it was performed at the Shreveport Opera this fall (yeah, yeah, I'm still kicking myself for that), but I feel better now having seen the movie.

Music
Ah, Music. One of my primary loves in life. I could talk at quite a length about music, but I'll try and hit the latest highlights for me.

Edit: I realized that I'm not going to be able to discuss this topic at all and keep it to any reasonable length, so I'm going to skip it. /cry

Anime
I'm wouldn't consider myself the type of hardcore otaku that most people have an image of, but I am a fan, and thanks to my large amounts of free time and boredom I manage to watch quite a volume of anime. While this is another topic I could discuss at length, I do rate the anime I watch which makes mentioning the good shows a lot easier. =P

Edit: *sigh* In order to prevent this from becoming a monster of a section also, I'm just going to make a small list, without going into much detail on each title. See animenewsnetwork.com for more info.

So I'm just going to list the titles that have received from me a 10/10 or "Masterpiece" rating, with the ones at the top being the most recent additions. Just to provide some info on my rating system, I generally like most anything, and have widely varied tastes in anime, enjoying pretty much any genre. That being said, I am very reserved in giving any anime a 10/10 rating. To give an idea of how strict that reservation is, I have seen, at present, 211 individual titles of anime, and while many are very close, only six carry my top rating. Those six are as follows:

Life
Generally the same as ever. Work is getting increasingly boring. Life outside of work is pretty much as boring as it has always been lately. Need to move somewhere else!

So, I'm not sure how many of you will get this reference, but I came across an interesting thing today...

I was watching a music video, and I noticed that the lead singer guy bears an eerie resemblance to Sōsuke Aizen from Bleach. Now we know what he does on all those boring days sitting in Hueco Mundo... There is also a pretty good similarity to the guy who played Aizen in the Bleach Rock Musical >_> [/nerd]

I really should keep up with this more, but honestly, there isn't much that happens to me that is worthy of note. =P

Tonight, however, was a rare exception, as I attended a performance of Carmen by the Shreveport Opera. It turned out to be an outstanding performance, even better than the last time I've seen it. I must say that Cristina Nassif (Carmen) has an amazing voice and it really didn't surprise me to discover that she has performed all over the nation at some very prestigious places, such as Carnegie Hall. Most of the cast I hadn't seen before, but the person who played Zuniga, Horace English, I found out is a professor at a college here in town. I thought that was kind of neat.

This was the last performance of the season, and I hate to see it end, but they have some good stuff lined up for next season that I'm looking forward to. I would encourage anyone to check Carmen out, even if you aren't a big opera fan. I'm sure that you have probably heard half of the music before and just never realized where it was from. Anyways, guess that's it for now. I'm not good at critiquing stuff like this, so I'm gonna leave my opinions at that. =P

So it seems that my last post here was on August 30, 2005. Crazy o.O The time sure flies by... So what has happened since then? Well... I've finished my undergrad degree (on to med school!), have a nice job working in clinical pathology in the meantime. I miss school already, heh I'm such a nerd. I admit it, but I don't mind. I don't really know what else to say about my RL, it's pretty boring. I need to get away from here so badly, but I don't know where I would go. =P

So right now, I'm sitting in my hotel room on my nifty 4-day weekend mini-vacation. (Only in Dallas, not exactly what I meant by getting away =/ ) This weekend has been a blast! So many great places to eat here, especially nice since Shreveport, despite being a moderately large city, is kind of limited in the way of nice places to eat. The group of people that I'm here with are a great bunch from the town I grew up in. We all pack up our computers and game in the hotel after the day is over. hah The highlight of this weekend was probably being able to go to the Cirque Du Soleil. We were lucky enough to snag some VIP passes and it was an awesome experience. Everything from the nightclub-esque refreshment tent (to be a portable tent, you sure wouldn't know it) to the great show itself was quite an experience. It's really hard to describe. It's something of a very abstract circus/play/musical/opera hybrid type show. I dunno, go check out their website. =P

So on the non-RL front...
FFXI: I retired for a long time, and tried to make a comeback when the expansion came out. I played for a few months, and ended up back in retirement. I thought the expansion was good, just didn't change the game away from the same boring tasks. The only reason I went back was because of the people. As much as I really enjoy the people that I know there, that in itself isn't enough of a reason for me to see myself ever going back. It seems that I remember a lot more people than remembered me. =/
WoW: Again, went back when the new expansion pack hit. Currently playing this now, and I must say, the expansion was, in my opinion, very nice. The new areas are very well designed and look awesome. I, of course, have some gripes, like the fact that all the pre-expansion end game gear that people spent weeks and months to get, basically was instantly outdated in favor of common items that the expansion brought. Yeah, new level cap means more powerful gear, but this was a poor way to implement that. Who knows how long I will stick around here, but it's enjoyable for the moment.

So that's about it... I may try (yet again) to start posting here more often than once every other year, but I can't make any promises. I wonder how many people still have me on their list and will see this. XD Life is pretty boring lately, which is odd, because I don't have nearly enough time to do all that I want to. Not sure how that worked out... Anyways, if anyone is still getting this, catch up with me via email/aim/msn or something, I think most of you have my info, if not, lemme know and I'll get it to you. haha I'd like to catch up with some of the people I've lost touch with over the past year or two. =) You know who you are!! >o

Wow... It's been a long time since I've updated this thing >.> So busy this fall since school is back in full swing. Senior year and I'm taking a whole spread of fun classes D: Let's see... Biochemistry(+lab), Molecular Biology(+lab), Medical Physics, Quantum Mechanics/Modern Physics, and then my 2 easy classes of literature and fine arts =p I'm also TA'ing a few chemistry labs as per request from the science department, so it's pretty hectic during the week.

Well I took my MCAT about 2 weeks ago... 8.5 hour test = there goes your nice saturday off. Even after the test I was so mentally exhausted, I just went home and passed out D: Also have my interview with the medical school admissions board at school next Friday which will also be fun -.-

I hate summer school. I chose to take a few classes this summer for some reason which I can't seem to remember, and it sucks. As if school during the summer isn't bad enough, its botany. OMG, plants are SO exciting!! Since I am going into HUMAN medicine, it makes a lot of sense that I am required to take this class. If someone comes into a hospital from having been impaled by a stalk of corn, I'll be able to kindly inform them that it isnt corn, its Zea Mays. There IS a difference. I can almost feel my Nobel prize.

Anyways, class is finally over, and I'm on the way home. It's 105'F outside, but I'm riding with the windows down instead of using the A/C. I figure my car can use some exercise, and the AC compressor only slows it down. It's fun to drive fast :D I love cars, especially my car, it's my baby~ But then! On the side of the road something catches my eye... I stare at it for what seems to be minutes and realize that I have passed it up. I pull a U-turn and go back to check it out again. Wow. This is truly a work of art... I only thought my car was cool. I had to get out and take pictures.

On a side note, this is my car after her bath and wax this past weekend ^^

This just serves as a painful reminder of where I live. I live in the South. Sadly, this unique vehicle came as little shock to me. I have even helped to design and make something similar to this in the past ;-; Please, save me from this place D:

Well, school is finally done for the semester~!!! /hurray! I'm so glad to be done for now, even though I start back for summer session in 2 weeks. >.< Whelp, I'm now officially a senior, so only one year left before med-school! O_O I know it's been quite a while since my last post here.. been completely slammed with schoolwork for finals. First week of May I had to write 2x 10 page research papers (Astrophysics and Bioethics), a book review for some history somethingorratherblahblah, 2x 1500word English papers, and 6x 2 page reviews on poems. ; ; So yeah that was fun.... then I started my final exams. Now school is out, and I'm staying surprisingly busy doing.. I'm not quite sure what. lol I'm working more until summer session starts which is tiring, but the money is nice. =p

As a few people already know, friends have sucker'd me into getting World of Warcraft. -.- As a result, I've been on FF much less as of late. It's a ton of fun, and the PvP system is just <3 Coincidentally, at almost the exact time I started shifting playtime from FF to WoW, the main person whispering Warcraft sweet nothings into my ear has went from WoW back to FF *COUGHLORECOUGH*. Not that that's a bad thing, I've been trying to rope her back in for some time now.^^ So I'm kindov playing a little of both now... mainly WoW atm, but I still am on FF chatting, helping ppl out, and LS events etc.

Well I logged into FF the other day and found myself in the middle of Quicksand Caves >_> Aparently I had volunteered to help Aris out with ZM, even though I could have sworn I was at work all day... Anyways, we had fun and finished which ever one we were doing haha.. I forget. We killed some anticans I remember, I dunno, it's been a while since I've done them. After everybody else left, the two of us stayed a bit and got some nice screenshots. ^^ If I find myself really bored when I get home, I'll try and put some pics on here. (If you see me, tell me to go do it ><) Hopefully we will find time to finish the ZMs up for everybody that needs them, and get to explore around sky :D Next we must finish up promys >.< so if anybody wants to help, please let me know ^^

The time I have been waiting for, for so long is finally upon us. Star Wars Episode III comes out Thursday. Of course I'll be driving back to my hometown to meet up with friends, and we are going to the midnight screening Wednesday night! Yay! Can't wait. Also i get to head to Monroe this weekend and FINALLY get to see my Chinese instructor again >.< It's been 5 weeks since I got to go last. This really isn't working out well.. I will be dead before I learn anything this way. I need somebody that I can talk to on a more regular basis to practice my skills. ='( I am to the point to where I have exhausted all of my resources. If any of you know anybody who can help me out with my studies, please let me know. I am very willing to pay someone to help me learn or even just practice my speech.

Well this past Thursday and Friday was 'Spring Fling' here at LSU. For those of you who don't know, basically it's just a huge party/fair event type of thing on campus.. The school provides tons of free food, live music, and all sorts of fun things to do, and most of the school clubs and organizations have tables and stands set up raising money. Well as VP of the Chemistry club, this past fall semester I decided we would make ice cream to sell. :D But of course, being the Chemistry club, we had to do something neat... So we make the ice cream outside when you order it and insta-freeze it with liquid nitrogen. >:D Provides for a very neat sight what with the nitrogen boiling off when it hits the air (BP= -195.8 C for the other nerds out there >.>), handing somebody a steaming (cold steam) bowl of ice cream, and them blowing steam from their mouth when they eat it. =P I have freeze burns on my tongue from eating too much right out of the pot. ='( Anyways, we made a nice bit of cash for the club, and had a ton of fun in the process! I'll put up some pics once I get them.

As far as FF goes, I haven't been on too much lately.. School >> Jason as we near the end of the semester... Have 2 research papers, 2 english essays, and a book review due this coming week, and finals the week after. -.- Vana'diel is much more beautiful now that I have a real computer that can run FF with good graphics. XD Clothcraft and misc. spending is slow depleting my gils, gonna have to get back to farming or something soon ; ; Hit lvl 88(i think?) cloth last full moon yay~!

Had a blast last night doing CN escort quest with Aristeia, Amemiya, and a few of the AC crew :D Even more fun followed with some shopping, adventuring, and screenshot madness with Ari ^^ Assuming she doesn't mind, I may have to post a few pics of that as well after I sort through them. Our adventures usually produce a hefty amount of ss to browse through... I'm pushing on about 1700 now I think >_> Nothing on Sakka's collection but I'm proud! XD

Yeah... so... This is the first entry here, and it only exists because work is so slow today and I'm _extremely_ bored. I figure that I'll atleast try and keep this updated, even though I have failed miserably in the past trying to keep a journal. At present time, I think a grand total of about one (1) person knows that this even exists. I have sent out friend requests to everybody that I know that has a LJ totaling about 7 haha.. I am friend of 1 person (yay!) but I plan to track down the rest and command them to add me! Muhahaha

Anyway, so yeah work is such a bore.. For anybody who doesn't know, I work at your friendly neighborhood Radioshack. Unfortunately I'm not at one of the neat mall stores or anything, but rather the one nobody knows about except the 80+ year old ladies who were here before the place was built and have nothing better to do than come in and browse around while talking about their grandchildren and how many cats they have (fun huh?). Work used to be fun, but now it's just bleh. I've been working here for about 4 years so I know a pretty good bit, which may seem nice, but that just means anybody who has a problem gets referred to me. -.-

Ok, enough of my work rant, on to the fun stuff. For my entire FFXI career I have been playing on a 3 year old notebook comp that doesn't even meet the minimum system req. to run the game (i'm serious). Somehow it holds together... well most of the time it does.. ok ok, every now and then I can coax it to run the game for a few hours. All settings at a bare minimum (lowest res, no shadows/weather, min char models, etc.) Well I finally got a new rig. It's sooo swuft (it's a word!! >.>) and shiny to boot! So I get home after racing to pick it up and of course I gotta install FFXI and witness it at full graphics glory. Install everything, go to setup and start dl'ing patch and OF COURSE now my internet has stopped working! >.<;; I just moved into a new house so it's bugging out here and there. /sigh World > Jason
